Telegram Warns French Users of EU Privacy Threat
Telegram has issued a stark privacy warning to users in France as the EU moves toward a vote on legislation that WOULD mandate mass scanning of private communications. The Chat Control initiative, backed by French officials including Interior Ministers Laurent Nunez and Bruno Retaillot, seeks to grant law enforcement access to citizens' messages under the guise of crime prevention.
Pavel Durov, Telegram's founder, condemned the proposal as a de facto ban on digital privacy. "This turns every smartphone into a surveillance device," he stated, noting that sophisticated criminals could circumvent the measures using VPNs or encrypted platforms while ordinary users bear the brunt of privacy erosion. The warning highlights a growing tension between state surveillance demands and encryption technologies that underpin Web3 and cryptocurrency ecosystems.
